Overview
Reusable Tampon Applicator by Cottonlock is a compact, washable applicator that keeps the familiar insertion gesture while cutting single-use waste. A lipstick-style capsule protects the applicator inside a slim outer case for clean, discreet carry—at home, at work, or on the go.
Problem & Opportunity
Disposable plastic applicators are convenient and familiar, yet they accumulate as single-use waste and feel conspicuous in everyday carry. Existing reusable options often read as technical equipment—fussy to clean, bulky to store, and visually “medical,” which raises the barrier to switching. Our design brief was clear: deliver the same gesture and comfort while removing friction—no new skills, no extra steps, and no special kit. The goal was reusability that feels effortless: discreet to carry, intuitive to load and place, simple to wash and dry, and compatible with common digital tampons—so sustainability is the default, not a compromise.
Design Intent
We preserved the ritual (load → place → press) and redesigned everything around it—soft geometry, palm-fit proportions, and a nested carry system that signals hygiene without clinical cues. The full cycle is just as intentional: use → reuse → wash. After placement, parts separate with a clear click for a quick rinse with mild soap; smooth surfaces and short flow paths speed drying, then the applicator docks back into its lipstick-style capsule to stay protected on the go. An integrated antimicrobial surface supports routine care—no boiling required—so the product fits everyday rhythms without adding choruses. The result is a friendly object you're comfortable carrying in a handbag or pocket, ready for the next use.

Compatibility: Works with common digital tampons, but we recommend Cottonlock tampons.
How to use
Wash your hands.
Remove the applicator from the storage case.
Load a non-applicator tampon into the open section of the outer cover with the string freely hanging. Don't forget to pull the string of the tampon quickly and firmly before loading to make sure that both ends are connected.
Push the bottom of the pusher onward, slowly slide the tampon up and stop when you can see the tip of the tampon. By doing this, you will secure the tampon into position ready for insertion.
When you're ready to insert the tampon, adopt a comfortable position and place the loaded applicator at the opening of your vagina.
Insert the applicator into your vagina, then use the pusher to release the tampon so it is fully inserted. The tampon should feel comfortable when placed properly.
Remove the applicator. Wash your hands and wash the applicator in running water and unscented intimate soap. Leave to air dry if possible or dry with a lint-free towel. DO NOT BOIL THE APPLICATOR.
Put the applicator back in the storage case to keep it safe and ready for the next use.
How to clean
We recommend to clean the applicator before the first use, after every use and at the end of your menstrual cycle following these steps:
Disassemble the reusable applicator by pulling the pusher away from the outer cover.
Rinse the reusable applicator with running water until all visible soil is removed. III. Wash all parts with unscented intimate soap and rinse until no visible soap residues remain.
Dry all parts (air dry or dry with a lint-free towel).
Once all parts are completely dried, reassemble and place the reusable applicator in the storage case. You can place the storage case in the carrying case to keep both the storage case and the applicator clean between cycles and ready for the next use.
ATTENTION: Do not use boiling water, any harsh cleansers or dishwashers to clean the applicator. Keep in a cool and dry place.
Materials
Applicator are made with medical grade polyethylene and food contact medical grade PE based masterbatch without intentionally added phthalates, BPA, latex, alkylphenols, PVC, or PAHs.
Integrated, non-leaching antimicrobial technology helps inhibit microbial growth on the product surface between cleanings; routine washing with water and mild soap is sufficient —no boiling required .

Prototypes were tested with users who prefer applicators as well as first-time adopters. Insights shaped the non-slip grip, low insertion force, and one-hand operation. The discreet form language reduces embarrassment in public settings. Universal compatibility avoids refill “lock-in” and supports affordability.

Packaging & Information Design
The retail pack is made from recyclable cardboard (single-material structure, easy to flatten and dispose of where facilities exist). A clear icon set communicates contents at a glance.
The visual language centers on a fig—a respectful, metaphorical nod to the female anatomy—avoiding clinical imagery while celebrating body positivity. This aligns with Cottonlock's fruit aesthetic: each product in the range is associated with a different fruit, creating an intuitive, memorable navigation system across SKUs.
Form and finish are intentionally calm to reduce stigma in everyday carry. Typography and color blocking keep claims restrained and instructions legible; The uncoated feel supports a low-gloss, approachable look consistent with the product's discreet character.
